This morning over breakfast I was reading an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer about Pennsylvania maple syrup production. My breakfast was oatmeal with maple syrup, cinnamon, and all space along with orange juice and a cup of tea. They talked about Pennsylvania’s production and compared it to Vermont’s, which made me want nothing more than to see a visual comparison of those two states to the others I know produce the delicious stuff: Massachusetts and New York.
But the article lacked any chart.
So I decided to make my own.
Vermont remains in a tier of its own. (Fun fact, you compare Vermont to Québec and everyone else pales in the palest of amber ways by comparison.)
This makes me want to tackle a different issue later. A few years ago I was having a beer with a Massachusetts maple syrup producer in a local bar in the Berkshires and he was explaining how climate change is making the conditions in Massachusetts so difficult that he expected in a decade the industry would be ruined in Massachusetts.
But for now, I just wanted to see how Pennsylvania maple syrup production compares to the rest of American producers.
Credit for the piece is mine.
