Six weeks ago I created a small interactive chart on the news that Wes Streeting, the then British health secretary, resigned in order to challenge Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for the leadership of the Labour Party.

Six weeks hence, Starmer has resigned.

Lo and behold, my interactive graphic still works:

British Governments of My Lifetime
Length of time in office, from Margaret Thatcher to Sir Keir Starmer
UK prime ministers since 1979; duration calculated in days and shown as years
Source: GOV.UK, “Past Prime Ministers.” Current government calculated through today.

The big question now: will Labour rally around a single candidate—Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester—or force a leadership contest? As of Tuesday morning, we have no answers other than a reports a few Starmer allies are considering the possibility.

For now, technically, Starmer remains in office as a caretaker prime minster—tending 10 Downing Street’s gardens so to speak. Depending on when he formally leaves office, he may just cross the threshold of two years in office. More than Sunak and Truss, combined, but surely short of what many envisioned after his massive electoral victory back in July 2024.

Credit for the piece is mine.
